FAQs about visiting Deep South

If you’re visiting the Deep South for the first (or even second) time, you’re bound to have questions about what to see and do, where to stay and how to get around. Here, our USA specialists share their insights.

How long should I spend in the Deep South?

We recommend allowing 7–10 days to experience the Deep South properly. This gives you time to explore key highlights at a relaxed pace—such as Nashville’s music scene, Memphis’ blues heritage, the culture and cuisine of Mississippi, and the vibrant atmosphere of New Orleans.

If you have more time, 10–14 days allows for a deeper, more immersive journey, with scenic detours, historic towns, and coastal stops along the way.

Is the Deep South a year-round destination?

Yes—the Deep South can be enjoyed year-round, with each season offering a different experience. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are particularly popular, thanks to pleasant temperatures and vibrant festivals. Summer (June–August) brings a lively atmosphere and longer days, though it can be hot and humid, while winter (December–February) is generally mild, making it a great time to explore with fewer crowds.

What’s the best time to visit the Deep South for more comfortable weather?

For the most comfortable weather, plan your visit in spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November). During these months, temperatures are typically warm but not overly humid, making it ideal for sightseeing, music trails, and outdoor exploration.

Is the Deep South suitable for older travellers?

Absolutely. Most trips to the Deep South are focused on the region’s incredible range of cultural activities and historical sights, so there’s plenty to see and do even if you are less active. There are no intensive outdoor experiences to be had and you’ll find you can easily get around most locations by foot, car or taxi.

Should I visit Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans on the same trip?

If you’re a music lover, there’s no better way to experience the Deep South than by visiting its three iconic musical cities—Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans. Each offers a distinct soundtrack and cultural identity, and together they create a rich, immersive journey.

They’re easily combined into one route, and with 7–10 days or more, you’ll have time to properly enjoy each destination at a comfortable pace. We also offer curated itineraries that bring these cities together seamlessly, so you can make the most of every stop along the way.

Do I need a car to explore the Deep South?

A car is highly recommended for exploring the Deep South, especially if you want to travel between cities and discover smaller towns, scenic byways, and hidden gems along the way.

While cities like Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans are easy to navigate without a car once you arrive, having your own vehicle gives you the flexibility to explore at your own pace and make the most of the journey between destinations.

For travellers who aren’t interested in driving, we do offer the option of a rail journey along the Gulf Coast region, passing through Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, providing an alternative way to experience the Deep South’s diverse landscapes and culture.

Are the driving distances long?

Driving distances in the Deep South are generally manageable and form part of the experience. Journeys between major cities—such as Nashville to Memphis (around 3–4 hours) or Memphis to New Orleans (around 6 hours)—are straightforward, with well-maintained highways and plenty of places to stop along the way.

You can also take more scenic routes like the Natchez Trace Parkway, a historic and beautifully preserved drive between Nashville, Tennessee and Natchez, Mississippi, known for its gentle pace and cultural significance.

Rather than feeling long, these drives are often rich in character, giving you the chance to discover music heritage sites, local eateries, and charming small towns along the way.

Is the Deep South safe for travellers?

Yes, the Deep South is absolutely safe for tourists. Main cities throughout the region are as safe as any other major US city, only requiring normal precautions in unfamiliar areas or if walking around late at night. Driving through rural areas is generally considered safe as well.

What are the food and dining experiences like in the Deep South?

Food in America’s Deep South is deeply influenced by the region’s multicultural roots. Dishes tend to vary by state, so you’ll find Cajun and Creole cooking in Louisiana, fried chicken and dry-rub ribs in Tennessee, fried catfish and hot tamales in Mississippi, and BBQ and fried green tomatoes in Alabama. The Deep South is also known for iconic dishes like cornbread, black-eyed peas with collard greens, banana pudding, buttermilk biscuits (savoury scones) and shrimp and grits (a creamy ground corn porridge similar to polenta).

Many of these dishes can be eaten in both casual and refined settings, but if Southern food isn’t for you, rest assured you can easily find alternative eateries offering all sorts of international and diet-specific (e.g. vegan) cuisine.

Drinks-wise, the region is famous for its sweet iced tea, which is very refreshing, and its cocktail culture, with many drinks centred around locally-produced bourbon.

What is the best city for first-time visitors?

For a first visit, New Orleans is often the top choice. Its unique blend of music, cuisine, history and atmosphere offers an instant sense of what makes the Deep South so special—all in one compact, walkable city.

That said, Nashville is a great alternative if you’re drawn to country music and a lively, modern feel, while Memphis is ideal for those interested in blues, rock ’n’ roll and civil rights history.

As all our holidays are bespoke, our Travel Experts can advise on the most suitable destinations for you, tailoring your trip to match your interests and travel style.

Are there beaches in the Deep South?

Yes—there are some excellent beach options across the Deep South, particularly along the Gulf Coast. States like Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana offer stretches of white sand and warm waters, ideal for a relaxing coastal escape.

Along Alabama’s Gulf Coast, destinations such as Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are known for their soft white sand and easy-going atmosphere. In Mississippi, the Gulf Coast offers scenic shores and charming seaside towns, while Louisiana’s coastline provides a more rugged, natural setting with a strong sense of local culture.

Is summer too hot to visit the Deep South?

Summer (June–August) in the Deep South can be hot and humid, with temperatures often reaching the low to mid-30s°C. However, it’s still a great time to visit if you plan accordingly.

Cities are lively, music scenes are in full swing, and there are plenty of air-conditioned attractions to enjoy. Slowing the pace, sightseeing earlier in the day, and perhaps combining your trip with time on the Gulf Coast can help you stay comfortable while making the most of the experience.

What should I pack for a holiday to the Deep South?

What you pack will largely depend on the season you’re travelling in. The Deep South is generally relaxed in style, and as most activities are leisurely rather than strenuous (unless you’re planning to visit areas like the Great Smoky Mountains), you can pack comfortable, casual clothing.

It’s best to check the forecast before you go so your wardrobe suits the temperatures—lighter, breathable outfits for warmer months, and layers for cooler periods—along with comfortable footwear for sightseeing.

How do tailor-made Deep South holidays with Journeyscape work?

TRAVEL EXPERT

“Out of all my travels to the United States, the Deep South is definitely the one region that is off the beaten tourist path. It’s also the one region where you feel you can take your time—and you should, as there’s so much to see and do in each location. They say the Deep South is the soul of America and it is. People are friendly and eager to share a story, which is such an amazing experience as a traveller. You get a sense of the local atmosphere no matter what city, town or state you are in. The music history in the major cities isn’t a thing of the past—it’s well and truly alive in the present and if you love music, you’ll find endless bars and venues to frequent, not to mention fascinating museums to visit. There’s incredible nature that’s really easy to access in Louisiana’s bayous and up the Great Smoky Mountains, and if you’re interested in history, there are so many opportunities to immerse yourself in that too. Just be mindful of when you visit – the summers can be stifling!”

When you visit the Deep South, you need to consider much more than just the places where you’ll stay and the activities you’ll do during your trip. Seasonality shapes traveller experiences far more than most realise, especially with different climates featuring throughout the region – from inland cities to coastal stretches and mountain foothills – so be sure to research properly before booking.
