The World’s Best Destinations for Dining at Dusk

There are few better parts of a holiday than enjoying an evening meal, watching the sun go down. The breeze leaves a slight prickle on your skin, the accompanying smell of after-sun, refreshing drinks, local cuisine and reflecting on the day’s events and activities with your loved ones.

It’s so nice, in fact, that a trend encapsulating this feeling has emerged. Dusking, as it’s known, is all about slowing down, watching the sun set and enjoying your surroundings.

Sounds like a good idea, doesn’t it? We certainly think so, anyway. That’s why we’ve ranked locations around the globe based on outdoor dining availability, sunset timing, sunset glow duration and summer rainfall to crown the best dusking spot in the world.

And while classic Mediterranean sunset destinations such as Dubrovnik, Santorini and Mykonos all perform strongly, the results show that North America is one of the world’s leading regions for dining as the sun goes down. Excellent news if you’re planning your next American holiday or bespoke Canadian tour.

The rankings at a glance

1. Sedona, Arizona, is the world’s best destination for dusk dining, with a score of 7.47 out of 10. The desert destination performs particularly well for sunset timing, with summer sunsets falling just 13 minutes and six seconds outside of a 7:30 pm dinner window.

2. North America dominates the global top 10, with six US destinations making the ranking. Sedona, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Bar Harbor, Santa Barbara, Po‘ipū and Monterey all rank among the world’s best places for dining at dusk.

3. Tulum, Mexico, is the best spot if you want to enjoy the sunset and eat at 7:30 pm – its average sunset time is less than six minutes away from the typical dinner time.

4. California is one of the strongest-performing regions in the study. Three places – Carmel-by-the-Sea, Santa Barbara and Monterey – all appear in the global top 10, while Napa Valley and Sonoma sit just outside the top 10 in joint 12th place.

5. The Greek islands of Mykonos and Santorini offer the best chance to dine outside, with over 60% of Santorini’s restaurants having outdoor seating.

Why dusk dining is becoming part of the travel experience

Dusking is rooted in the idea of slowing down, but for travellers, it also shows a wider shift in how people want to experience destinations.

Rather than packing every evening with plans or treating dinner as a functional stop between activities, dusk dining encourages you to build the atmosphere of a place into the meal itself.

That might mean booking a vineyard terrace in California, watching the sky change over the red rocks of Sedona, choosing a harbourfront table in British Columbia, or planning the final stop on a coastal road trip around sunset.

The world’s best destinations for dusk dining

Our study compared the percentage of restaurants offering outdoor seating, how closely summer sunsets align with a typical 7:30 pm dinner window, how long the sky remains naturally light after sunset, and how much rainfall each destination receives across June, July and August.

This Arizona city has beaten some of the most popular holiday destinations in the world to be named the best place for dusk dining

Sedona is the world’s best destination for dining at dusk, beating some of the world’s most famous sunset spots, including Santorini, Mykonos, Dubrovnik and the Amalfi Coast.

The Arizona city scored 7.47 out of 10 thanks to its strong balance of outdoor dining, well-timed sunsets and low summer rainfall.

According to the study, over two-fifths (40.7%) of Tripadvisor-listed restaurants in Sedona offer outdoor seating, giving you a strong chance of finding an al fresco table.

Its summer sunsets also occur among the closest to a 7.30 pm dinner sitting, only beaten in the top 10 by Po‘ipū.

Average daily summer rainfall is also low, at just 0.7mm, making Sedona particularly well-suited to outdoor evenings.

Dubrovnik and Santorini serve up Europe’s best dusk dining opportunities

While Sedona takes the top spot, Mediterranean destinations round out our top three, with Dubrovnik in second and the Greek island of Santorini in third.

Dubrovnik’s positioning is thanks to over half (56.2%) of its Tripadvisor-listed restaurants having outdoor seating. The Croatian city also has a sunset glow duration of 31 minutes 18 seconds, giving diners more time to enjoy the post-sunset light.

Santorini ranks third, with the strongest outdoor dining availability in the global top 10. More than six in 10 Tripadvisor-listed restaurants on the island offer outdoor seating, making it one of the easiest destinations in the study to find an al fresco table.

The best US destinations for sunset dining

The United States dominates the global dusk dining ranking, with six US destinations appearing in the world’s top 10.

1. Sedona, dusk dining score: 7.47/10 

As it’s the top-ranked location globally, it’s only right that Sedona, Arizona, also takes the top spot in the North American ranking, scoring 7.47 out of 10. 

Despite its high rankings in our data, Arizona is still somewhat of a hidden gem for UK travellers. According to the most recent figures, 79,000 people travelled from the UK to Arizona in 2023.¹ 

This is over 8 times less than the 652,000 who visited California in the same period – highlighting the difference in attention from UK travellers.²

2. Carmel-by-the-sea, dusk dining score: 7.00/10 

Carmel-by-the-Sea ranks second in the US (fourth globally), with a score of 7.00 out of 10. The California coastal destination performs particularly well for dry summer evenings, recording just 0.1mm of average daily summer rainfall. 

More than a third of its Tripadvisor-listed restaurants offer outdoor seating, giving you plenty of options for al fresco coastal dining at dusk.

If you’re still outdoors when the sun goes down in Carmel, you might be in for even more of a treat. The town has no street lights in residential areas, minimising light pollution and maximising stargazing potential.³

3. Bar Harbor, dusk dining score: 6.96 out of 10

Heading over to the north-east of the US, Bar Harbor, Maine, sits third with the highest outdoor seating percentage among the US top five – 42.9% of the town’s restaurants offer outdoor seating. 

Elsewhere, a sunset glow duration of over 32 minutes also gives diners a longer window of natural evening light after the official sunset.

Canada’s best destinations for golden hour dining

Canada’s strongest dusk dining destinations are found across British Columbia and Alberta, with lakeside cities, mountain resorts and coastal towns all appearing in the country’s top five.

1. Kelowna, dusk dining score: 6.32 out of 10

We have a joint first place in Canada, with Kelowna making the cut. The British Columbia city performs especially well for dry summer evenings, recording just 0.7mm of average daily rainfall across June, July and August. Its average civil twilight dining window lasts 38 minutes and 24 seconds, giving diners more than half an hour of natural light after the official sunset.

Set on Okanagan Lake and surrounded by vineyards, Kelowna is particularly well suited to slower evening dining, with lakeside restaurants, wine country terraces and scenic outdoor tables all forming part of the destination’s appeal.

1. Whistler, dusk dining score: 6.32 out of 10

Joining Kelowna in first place is Whistler. While the area’s summer sunsets fall later than the 7:30pm dinner benchmark, this can work in its favour for travellers planning full days of hiking, biking or sightseeing before sitting down to dinner.

The mountain resort has the second-highest outdoor seating percentage in Canada’s top five, with 42.1% of Tripadvisor-listed restaurants offering outdoor seating. It also has a long sunset glow duration of 38 minutes and 42 seconds, giving you time to enjoy the evening light after a day spent outdoors.

3. Tofino, dusk dining score: 5.88 out of 10

Tofino is in third place, with the Vancouver Island destination having the strongest outdoor dining availability of Canada’s top five (43.6% of Tripadvisor-listed restaurants offering outdoor seating). 

Its average civil twilight dining window also lasts 37 minutes and 30 seconds, giving diners a generous post-sunset glow.

Known for its rugged coastline, beaches and relaxed pace, Tofino is a strong choice for people looking to combine coastal scenery with casual outdoor dining.

Want to eat at sunset? Head to Tulum, Mexico

Some destinations may be famous for sunset views, but the timing does not always work neatly for dinner.

To identify where sunset is most naturally suited to an evening meal, Journeyscape compared average summer sunset times with a 7:30 pm dinner benchmark. The lower the time difference, the better the destination scored for dinner-time sunset alignment.

Tulum has the closest average sunset time to the 7:30 pm dinner sitting, with summer sunsets falling just less than 6 minutes away. 

Meanwhile, Po‘ipū ranks second, at just over 11 minutes, the highest-placed US location, with two other US destinations also making the top five – highlighting that travellers can experience great sunsets across the US. 

Incidentally, the other US locations are both in Arizona, with one of them, Sedona, the world’s best dusk dining location. Here, summer sunsets fall just over 13 minutes from the dinner window of 7:30.

This is one of the reasons Sedona ranks so highly overall. Its sunset is not only scenic, but also conveniently timed for travellers who want to enjoy the view from an outdoor table.

Whitehorse, Canada has the longest sunset glow in the world

A sunset dinner does not end the moment the sun disappears. In many destinations, the sky remains naturally light long after official sunset, creating the softer post-sunset glow that makes an evening feel more relaxed.

To measure this, Journeyscape calculated the average time between official sunset and the end of civil twilight. This shows how long diners can typically enjoy natural evening light after the sun goes down.

North America dominates this area of our study, with four of the world’s top five destinations for sunset glow found in Canada and the United States.

Whitehorse has the longest sunset glow duration in the study, with an average of 76 minutes between official sunset and the end of civil twilight. Anchorage follows at 72 minutes, 12 seconds.

Reykjavik (72 minutes) is the only non-North American location to be featured in the top five, just 12 seconds away from Anchorage’s glow duration. 

Canada performs particularly strongly in this category, with six destinations in the top 10. Jasper, Banff, Calgary, Whistler, Kelowna and Vancouver all offer extended twilight windows, giving you more time to enjoy the natural light after sunset.

This is particularly useful for planning Canada holidays built around outdoor experiences, where dinner may follow a day of hiking, lake visits, sightseeing or scenic drives.

Two Greek Islands have the highest ratio of al fresco dining options in the world

A beautiful sunset is one thing, but enjoying it from an outdoor table is another.

To understand where al fresco dining is most widely available, Journeyscape analysed the percentage of Tripadvisor-listed restaurants with outdoor seating in each destination.

Santorini tops the outdoor dining ranking, with over two-fifths (61.1%) of Tripadvisor-listed restaurants offering outdoor seating. Mykonos follows with 58.6%, while Dubrovnik ranks third at 56.2%.

North America still performs strongly in this category, with five Canadian and US destinations making up the top 10. Po‘ipū ranks fourth, with over half (52.0%) of restaurants offering outdoor seating, while Tofino, Bar Harbor, Whistler and Sedona also appear in the top 10.

This helps explain why North America performs so well in the overall ranking. Many of its strongest destinations do not rely on sunset views alone, but combine scenery with a strong outdoor dining culture.

The driest destinations for dining outdoors at dusk

Rainfall can quickly change the appeal of an outdoor dinner, especially if you’re hoping to book a terrace, patio or waterfront table.

To identify the destinations most suited to al fresco summer evenings, Journeyscape analysed average daily rainfall across June, July and August.

California dominates the driest destinations ranking. Napa Valley, Sonoma and San Francisco all record 0.0mm average daily summer rainfall, while Carmel-by-the-Sea, Santa Barbara, Monterey and San Diego all record just 0.1mm.

This gives California one of the strongest claims in the study for reliable al fresco dining. From wine country terraces to coastal restaurants and city views, the state combines outdoor dining, low rainfall and highly scenic evening settings.

If you don’t want anything to cloud your dusk dining experience, these destinations need to be on your list

Clearer skies can make a major difference to a dusk dining experience. A destination may have plenty of outdoor restaurants, well-timed sunsets and low rainfall, but higher cloud cover can dampen anyone’s spirits – hiding the glow of the sun and reducing the chance of seeing the changing colours of the evening sky.

To identify the destinations with the most uninterrupted dusk views, Journeyscape analysed average daily cloud cover across June, July and August.

Santorini ranks first globally, with average daily summer cloud cover of just 3.8%. That’s more than 13 times lower than the average across the full study (49.7%).

Its fellow Greek Island, Mykonos, is second with 5.4% cloud coverage. Technically, this also means lower rates of silver linings, but with such stunning views of winding streets and striking whitewashed houses overlooking the Mediterranean sea, we can’t imagine that’s much of an issue.  

Meanwhile, Napa Valley is the highest-ranking North American destination, placing third globally with average cloud cover of 15.9%.

Santa Barbara ranks fourth with just over a fifth of its skies covered by cloud. This means two of the world’s top four destinations for clearer dusk dining views are in California, reinforcing the state’s strength as a destination for outdoor summer evenings.

How to plan the perfect dusk dining trip

Journeyscape’s North American Travel Expert, Rob Holmes, gives his tips on maximising sunset hours to ensure your dusking doesn’t disappoint:

“If you’re hoping to make dusk dining part of your next trip, you need to think about more than just the restaurant. The best sunset dining experiences often come from a combination of timing, setting and itinerary planning.

“Consider:

• Looking for west-facing restaurants with outdoor seating, terraces, patios or waterfront tables, to ensure you’re facing the sunset

• Checking what time sunset is and booking ahead of time, to ensure you’re dining at the best possible time

• Thinking about the post-sunset glow, not just the official sunset time

• Building dinner into the natural end point of the day’s itinerary

• Choosing scenic regions where the evening setting adds to the experience

“For travellers planning North America tours, this could mean ending a day of exploring with a red-rock dinner in Sedona, a coastal table in Monterey, a vineyard meal in Sonoma, or a lakeside evening in Kelowna.”

Methodology

To identify the world’s best destinations for dusk dining, Journeyscape created a seed list of destinations known for dining, leisure, touring, scenic views and outdoor travel experiences, with a particular focus on North America.

Each destination was analysed across four factors.

Outdoor dining availability

Tripadvisor was used to record the total number of restaurants listed for each destination, alongside the number of restaurants listed as offering outdoor seating.

Journeyscape then calculated the percentage of total restaurants listed as offering outdoor seating. This was used to understand how widely available al fresco dining is in each destination.

Sunset timing

To identify destinations where sunset is well-suited to dinner, sunset times were collected for each destination between 1 June 2026 and 31 August 2026 using the Sunrise-Sunset API. This used each destination’s latitude, longitude and timezone.

For each date, the local sunset time was compared with a target evening dining benchmark time of 7:30 pm. This was used as a consistent comparison point as it sits within typical evening dining hours. A lower figure was considered better, as it shows that sunset occurs closer to a typical evening dining window.

For destinations where sunset crossed midnight, the shortest distance around a 24-hour clock was used to avoid overstating the time difference.

Sunset glow duration

To measure how long destinations remain naturally light after sunset, civil twilight end times were also collected from the Sunrise-Sunset API for each date between 1 June 2026 and 31 August 2026.

Journeyscape then subtracted the sunset time from the civil twilight end time to calculate sunset glow duration. This measures the average number of minutes between official sunset and the end of civil twilight, when there is still enough natural light for many outdoor activities.

For high-latitude destinations where civil twilight may behave unusually during summer, these values were excluded from the average.

Summer rainfall

Average daily rainfall was calculated using Open-Meteo’s historical weather API. Daily precipitation totals were collected for June, July and August across the ten-year period from 2016 to 2025.

The average daily rainfall for each summer month was then calculated for each destination.

Scoring

Each destination was scored across the four factors, with each metric normalised on a 0–10 scale.

The four normalised scores were weighted equally and averaged to produce a final dusk dining score out of 10.

A separate North America ranking was also created to highlight the strongest-performing destinations across the United States and Canada.

Cloud cover

Separately, Journeyscape also analysed average cloud cover for each destination using Open-Meteo’s historical weather API.

Daily mean cloud cover values were collected for June, July and August across the ten-year period from 2016 to 2025, before an average was taken across these months for each destination.

Cloud cover was not included in the final dusk dining score, but was used as an additional contextual metric.

Tripadvisor data reflects listed availability as of 25 June 2026.

For regions, islands and wider destinations, sunset and rainfall data were based on coordinates in the main tourist areas. Results are therefore representative of these areas, rather than the entire region.
