Overview & Highlights
From the Civil War and Civil Rights to the history of Soul and Jazz, discover the complex history of America’s southern states and the birthplace of some of modern music’s most endearing genres, with this in-depth trip to the Deep South. You will start your trip in one of the South’s biggest cities, Atlanta, before crossing into the history and music of Alabama and finishing your trip with three lively days in New Orleans.
Begin your journey in Atlanta. A modern city bursting with Southern charm and world-class culture, you’ll get an introduction here to contemporary life in the South before going back in time to 1960s America after arriving in Alabama’s most storied cities, Birmingham and Montgomery three days later. You’ll learn all about the heart-rending Civil Rights Movement and the African-American struggle for equality – even getting firsthand knowledge from people who lived through this period in American history. You’ll then take a break by delving into music history with a visit to the FAME Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals. Alabama’s music capital, this is the place where the Soul and R&B sounds of the Sixties and Seventies were born.
Next stop is Alabama’s Gulf Coast and the pretty historic city of Mobile. Once the original capital of Louisiana, Mobile has history, beauty and even a chance to explore a retired WWII battleship during your stay.
You’ll then head to your final stop, New Orleans. The indisputable birthplace of Jazz, New Orleans is a vibrant city rich in history, and the perfect place to finish your cultural and musical journey through the Deep South. From private walking tours of the iconic French Quarter and cooking classes in the local Creole/Cajun cuisine to Antebellum era plantation visits and lively evening Jazz shows – you’ll get to experience it all before you leave.
