Texas

Long considered America’s Wild West, modern Texas combines cowboy boots and country music with sensational urban cities built on oil-wealth. Discover this big state with an even bigger heart.

There’s nothing small about Texas – from its size as the second largest state in the nation to its pickup trucks, 10-gallon hats and thousands of kilometres of scenic, rugged terrain encompassing sprawling prairies, desert Badlands, lush mountains and swimmable coastlines – it’s practically its own country. And it once was. The Lone Star State, as it’s often referred to, was self-governed from 1836 to 1845, and holds on to its distinct independent spirit to this day.

Long known as a cowboy country, Texas has no shortage of country culture with rodeos, ranches and line-dancing a part of everyday life, but there are sensational cities with a rich cultural legacy to be found too.

From the glittering skyline of industry in Dallas to the world-famous Alamo mission and Mexican flair of San Antonio; Houston is home to the nation’s space programme and Austin celebrates live music like nowhere else. Texas cities have thriving arts and culinary scenes, and some of America’s most famous sports teams too. See the world’s only twice-daily cattle drive in Fort Worth and get a taste of cowboy life by spending a weekend on a working ranch in Bandera. Texas also has a little known wine country that is making a name for itself on the international stage.

Outdoor lovers will relish in the state’s mild year-round climate perfect for city exploration and hikes along Texas's stunning countryside. The state is also home to one of the USA’s most beautiful and remote national parks, Big Bend, and more than 600 miles of pristine coastline along the Gulf Coast.
