From world-famous cities to world-class beaches, California is at the forefront of contemporary culture. Discover it for yourself with a visit to the Golden State.

California is a place that needs little introduction – its culture has been exported the world over from tech to celluloid to surf and it's home to two of the world’s most recognisable cities: Los Angeles and San Francisco – most of us think we already know it from what we see in the mainstream.

But no matter how much we think we know, California's incredible beauty and diversity in both land and lifestyle is something that will take more than one trip to fully explore. From the pristine Pacific coasts to the verdant vineyards of Napa Valley; the dream-like deserts of Palm Springs and the gorgeous mountains and lakes of the Sierra Nevada – it’s one thing to see California on screen, but it’s a whole other experience to live it in person.

Start with California's world-famous cities. Directly accessible from the UK, choose between laid-back, sunny San Diego, glitzy, glamorous Los Angeles or the metropolitan icon that is San Francisco. Each one has a unique character and culture that is all its own, not to mention a prestigious location along California’s incredible coast.

A drive along this beautiful nearly 900-mile length of the state is a must. The Pacific Coast Highway will take you past scenic sights up and down the state, so make sure you stop by the charming towns and delightful beaches along the way.

Of course, the coast isn’t all there is to see, and a journey inland offers a myriad of natural treasures. Travel to the lush vineyards of Northern California – the state produces 90% of America’s finest wines – and a visit here will also include some of the state’s finest dining. From the high peaks of Yosemite National Park to the magnificent redwood forests, nature thrives in California. So much so, in fact, that the state alone produces half of the fruit and vegetables for the United States. You’ll quickly find that farm-fresh food is something California is known for.

Whether you want to take a surf lesson on Huntington Beach or visit one of LA’s many impressive museums, stroll through San Diego’s picturesque Balboa Park or cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge, with so much to do and see, it won’t be long before you realise that California is an incredible place to be.
