Running for 2,448 miles, across 8 states and 3 time zones from the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago, Illinois to the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica, California, Route 66, or the Mother Road as it is affectionately called, is one of the world’s most iconic road trips and America’s most famous drive.
Opened in 1926 – turning the Great American Highway into a thing of legend – it was the first corridor across the continent connecting isolated cities and towns by bringing visitors, custom and prosperity in ways that hadn’t previously been achieved.
Today, Route 66 is all about nostalgia and classic Americana. From time-capsule towns and neon signs to vast landscapes and stops full of history, you’ll experience an America of old on this incredible historic road. Start in Chicago and end in Santa Monica, stopping in countless towns and locations along the way, and experiencing the drive that millions have made in search of fun, freedom and the wide, open road. Forget the destination – this trip is all about the journey.

Our expert's opinion
“Many holidays claim to take you along the Route 66 but with so many contemporary developments cutting into the original road, it can be hard to know what route you’re actually following. But not with this journey! This 3-week road trip takes you on the original Route 66 past the locations that have made this drive iconic for generations. From eating in original 1950s diners and staying in a Wigwam to stopping at sites like the Petrified Forest National Park - this drive was without a doubt a once-in-a-lifetime trip! ”
