WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE...?
PLACE
My personal favourite destination is, rather unusually, New Mexico; a melting pot of Cowboys & Native Americans; it’s large enough to have grandiose skyscrapers, yet small enough to retain a friendly local feel & features plenty of authentic culture and amazing scenery which is less visited than some of the surrounding states. Craft beers, great food and good weather make it a must-go ‘off-the-beaten-path’ US destination.
HOTEL
Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge. Without question, the Canadian wilderness stay, it prides itself on an off-grid, back-to-nature experience with unparalleled service. Clayoquot offers tented ‘glamping’ accommodation in luxurious prospect-style tents, all with en suite facilities and high-end fittings. A massive array of outdoor experiences interspersed with exceptional wildlife viewing and food to die for mean it really is a ‘bucket list’ destination.
EXPERIENCE
One of my most memorable cultural experiences was at Courtyard by Marriott O‘ahu North Shore, where an evening with local celebrity ‘Auntie Kela’ offered a genuinely immersive insight into Hawaiian life. Through hula dancing, ukulele playing and traditional weaving – all woven together with folklore and island tales – the experience felt warm, natural and refreshingly untouristy. It was an authentic celebration of local culture, made all the more special by Auntie Kela’s obvious passion for sharing it; the kind of experience that stays with you long after the holiday ends.
What are your destination highlights?
ROUTE 66
The moniker of the “ultimate US road trip” is never more appropriate than on Route 66. Spanning nearly 2,500 miles across 8 States, the journey offers everything that a road trip should through America. Sprawling metropolises, rural towns, quirky Americana & incredibly varied scenery, it really does tick every box. There are also many ways to include portions of the journey, just some of the highlights and plenty of small diversions to more off-the-beaten-path locations too. Having driven the route in its entirety two times, abiding memories include a classic drive-in movie in Tulsa, Oklahoma and a private tour of the Native American town of Taos, New Mexico.
WILDERNESS LODGES AND CANADIAN ROCKIES
Many trips to Canada are incomplete without the immense turquoise lakes, outdoor towns and mountains of British Columbia and Alberta, however, my advice would be to tick those boxes but then get away from the tourist trail by visiting one of Canada’s wilderness lodges. Generally accessible only by seaplane or boat, these offer a truly immersive experience, where wildlife is right on your doorstep and should be combined with outdoor pursuits such as kayaking, rock climbing or, depending on the resort, simply sipping cocktails with a view of the incredible surrounding scenery.
HAWAI‘I
Hawai‘i is one of my favourite destinations because it goes far beyond the iconic scenery, offering a deep connection to place, culture and storytelling. From discovering ancient Hawaiian culinary traditions in locally owned settings – helping to build an imu, preparing traditional dishes and learning regenerative eco‑practices that give back to the land – to visiting a remote sanctuary on the Island of Hawai’i (Big Island) once used as a place of redemption for those who broke sacred laws during battle, the islands are rich in meaning and authenticity. Add in dramatic landscapes like Kualoa Ranch on Oʻahu, famous for Jurassic Park, and you have a destination that balances cinematic beauty with powerful history, living culture and experiences that stay with you long after you leave.
What are you top travel tips?
Fuel up early
Road trips often take you through long stretches of wonderfully wild, remote landscapes. To avoid any unnecessary stress, make a habit of filling up once your tank reaches around a quarter full—you never quite know when the next gas station will appear.
Don’t try to see it all
Distances in the USA and Canada can be deceptively vast, making it easy to cram too much into one trip. Taking a slower pace allows you to discover unexpected highlights and truly enjoy each destination. In North America, less really is more.
