Northern lights over Manitoba in Canada

When witnessing the aurora borealis, an awe-inspiring spectacle of multi-coloured rays, spirals and ribbons that paint the night sky, you may feel as though you have been transported into a universe beyond. It’s important that you are well-prepared ahead of your trip, so that you can be completely in the moment during the experience.

the best time to see the northern lights in canada

The best months to observe the Northern Lights are February and March when temperatures in places like Yukon and Churchill, Manitoba can reach as low as -23°C, so be well-prepared for the cold. You will observe this magical phenomenon in a remote wilderness, away from any light sources that could hinder your viewing. Check out our packing list below to tick off the items to ensure that you are all set for your trip!

what to pack for a northern lights trip in canada

  • Winter snow boots
These should protect your feet against the cold as well as providing strong grip to cope with the conditions. You might also want to pack ice cleats for extra grip.

  • Thermal ski jacket with hood
This should be snow proof so that you don’t get damp or cold.

  • Thermal ski pants or salopettes
    These should be snow proof.

  • Thermal base layers
You will need to wear both a long-sleeve top and leggings

  • Jumper, fleeces and sweatshirts
We recommend merino wool to keep you warm. You will likely want to wear 3 or 4 layers underneath your outer layer at this temperature.

  • Fleece-lined trousers and thermal socks
We recommend packing an additional pair of trousers to wear over your thermal leggings for extra warmth.

  • Scarf, snood, balaclava, gloves and hat
It is a good idea to keep as much of your skin covered as possible and these accessories are a must.

  • Lip balm and moisturiser
The freezing temperatures can dry out your skin, so we recommend packing some moisturising products so that you feel more comfortable during your trip.

  • Hand warmers
For additional warmth pack rechargeable hand warmers that you can keep in your pockets.

  • Camera batteries
The cold air drains batteries more rapidly than usual, so we recommend packing a few spares if you plan to take photographs.

  • Backpack
This should either be waterproof or you should use a waterproof cover to protect all items inside.

  • Reusable water bottle / thermal travel flask
