Tales from the Road: San Antonio and Bandera
San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country had been on my radar for a while — a place where rich culture, vibrant neighbourhoods, and legendary cowboy heritage come together in a way that feels both larger‑than‑life and wonderfully down‑to‑earth.
Earlier this year, I finally had the chance to experience it for myself. From riding out to breakfast on a traditional ranch in Bandera to drifting down the San Antonio River Walk beneath twinkling lights, the trip was filled with memorable contrasts, warm hospitality, and the kind of authentic experiences that stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
In this Q&A, I’m sharing the highlights of my journey — where I stayed, what I loved, the surprises along the way, and the tips I’d pass on to anyone planning their own Texas adventure. Whether you’re drawn to wide‑open countryside, world‑class food, or the cultural heartbeat of one of the USA’s most captivating cities, I hope my experience inspires your next escape.
Which country and region did you visit?
I visited the state of Texas in the United States, spending time in Bandera and the vibrant city of San Antonio.
Located in south-central Texas, San Antonio is the seventh-largest city in the US and the second-largest city in Texas. Despite its size, the city has a welcoming, relaxed feel and is known for its rich cultural heritage.
How did you get to San Antonio?
I flew from London Heathrow with Delta, travelling via Atlanta before continuing to San Antonio. We flew in Premium Economy, which made for a very comfortable and relaxed journey, setting the tone nicely for the trip ahead. After arriving at San Antonio International Airport, we transferred to Bandera where our adventure began — an easy drive of approximately one hour, made even more memorable as we witnessed the most incredible sunset as we approached the ranch.
When did you go and for how long?
I visited at the end of February for five nights. Two nights were spent at the wonderful Mayan Dude Ranch in Bandera, which offered a fantastic introduction to authentic Texas ranch life. After that, we headed into the city for a three-night stay at the beautiful 4* Mokara Hotel & Spa, a luxury hotel located right on the River Walk.
Late February proved to be a brilliant time to travel, with San Antonio enjoying plenty of warm, golden sunshine and daytime temperatures climbing into the 20s. As the sun set, the air turned cooler—perfect for an evening stroll along the River Walk with just a light jacket—offering a refreshing contrast to the lingering winter chill back in the UK at this time of year.
Where did you go?
I began my trip in Bandera, Texas, known as the “Cowboy Capital of the World,” which offered an authentic introduction to Texan ranch country. Staying there meant wide‑open landscapes, warm hospitality and a slower, more traditional pace of life. It was the perfect place to soak up the spirit of the Hill Country before heading into the city.
From Bandera, I travelled on to San Antonio, one of Texas’s most culturally rich and characterful cities. Known for its fascinating blend of Mexican and Texan heritage, San Antonio offers a vibrant mix of history, food, music and architecture. From the historic missions and vibrant neighbourhoods to the famous San Antonio River Walk, the city has an energy that makes it incredibly enjoyable to explore.
What struck me most was the diversity of experiences packed into one destination. One moment you can be immersed in centuries of history at landmarks such as The Alamo and Mission San Jose, and the next you’re discovering contemporary food markets, art districts and lively restaurants along the River Walk. It’s a city where culture, history and cuisine effortlessly come together.
Experiencing both Bandera and San Antonio on the same trip created a wonderfully varied journey through the heart and heritage of Texas.
Which was your favourite…?
Place
My favourite place was the Mayan Dude Ranch in Bandera. Staying on a traditional Texas ranch is such a unique experience and gives you a real feel for the region’s cowboy heritage. The setting is stunning, with sweeping Hill Country views, and the atmosphere is incredibly welcoming — relaxed, communal and full of classic Texan hospitality.
The ranch operates on an all‑inclusive basis, meaning activities, food and drink are all taken care of. There’s a fantastic variety of things to do, offering something for everyone. You can try Western dance lessons, join a dinosaur track walk, enjoy live music, take part in a BB gun shooting competition, head out on wildlife drives, or saddle up for horseback riding through the rugged countryside.
The food is a real highlight too. Hearty, home‑cooked ranch meals are served family‑style, adding to that warm, communal feel and bringing guests together in a wonderfully friendly way. Whether you’re out exploring or simply soaking up the peaceful surroundings, the Mayan Dude Ranch offers an experience that’s both authentically Texan and genuinely memorable.
Hotel
The Mokara Hotel & Spa was a real highlight. This luxury hotel sits right on the River Walk and offers spacious rooms, a rooftop pool and a wonderful spa. Its location is perfect for exploring the city on foot while still feeling like a peaceful retreat in the heart of downtown San Antonio.
I enjoyed a fabulous massage in the spa, which is a beautiful, calming haven — truly one of the best I’ve visited — and I’d highly recommend it to anyone staying there.
Starting the day with a coffee on my balcony, watching the River Walk slowly come to life as people wandered along the water, was such a lovely way to ease into the morning. Then in the evenings, the same view transformed into something vibrant and full of energy, with music, restaurants and people giving the area its signature buzz. It felt like the perfect blend of peaceful retreat and lively urban atmosphere.
Excursion
One of my favourite excursions was the walking tour of La Villita Historic Arts Village and Hemisfair. The tour highlighted San Antonio’s artistic and cultural side, including a Texan wine tasting at Re:Rooted and a Mexican wine tasting at Casa Guizpot. Sampling wines from both regions was a fantastic way to discover the city’s creative communities while learning more about its history and cultural influences.
What was your most memorable moment?
One of the most memorable moments of the trip was horseback riding to breakfast each morning at the ranch. It’s not every day you start the morning riding through the Texas countryside before sitting down to a breakfast freshly prepared over an open fire and served outdoors.
In contrast, evenings in San Antonio offered a completely different but equally memorable experience. One night we enjoyed dinner while floating along the River Walk on a private boat. You can hire a barge and arrange for any restaurant along the River Walk to prepare dinner for you, creating a wonderfully unique dining experience as you glide through the city’s beautifully lit waterways.
To round off the night, head to the San Fernando Cathedral at 9pm (Tuesday–Sunday) to witness a breathtaking 24‑minute, 7,000‑sq‑ft projection video art installation cast across the façade of the historic cathedral. Created by world‑renowned French artist Xavier de Richemont, this stunning display takes you on a vivid visual journey through the history of San Antonio — a perfect finale to an unforgettable evening.
What surprised you most?
Just how friendly everyone is. You often hear about Southern hospitality, but in San Antonio it truly is genuine. People are incredibly welcoming and always interested to hear where you’re from and what you’re doing in the city.
Another surprise was just how culturally rich San Antonio is, with something for every type of visitor. History lovers can explore iconic sites such as The Alamo and the UNESCO‑listed Spanish Missions, discovering the stories that shaped the region. Art enthusiasts are spoiled for choice too, from independent galleries and museums to vibrant street art tours that reveal the city’s creative edge.
And for foodies, San Antonio is a dream. You’ll find everything from some of the best Texas BBQ to Mexican delicacies and bold Tex‑Mex creations. Food lovers can even get hands‑on at Rita’s on the River, which offers interactive cooking demos followed by a delicious lunch—perfect for anyone wanting to experience authentic flavours in a fun, immersive way.
Another must‑visit culinary hotspot is Pullman Market—a specialty grocer, restaurant hub, and vibrant food hall showcasing the very best of local Texas produce. Here you’ll find everything from a butcher and bakery to four distinct restaurants under one roof. Visitors can also take part in a variety of classes; we particularly enjoyed the Ceviche‑Making Class, which was both informative and delicious.
Any local snacks, dishes or drink that should be sampled?
Margaritas are an absolute must when visiting San Antonio. With the city’s strong Mexican influence, you’ll find fantastic versions everywhere, often freshly made with local twists.
Texas barbecue is also essential. Expect generous portions and incredibly rich flavours, from slow-smoked brisket to flavourful sides.
Any restaurant or bar recommendations?
There are so many great places to eat in San Antonio – everywhere we ate was genuinely very good. The city’s rich cultural mix is reflected in its food and drink scene, creating a blend of flavours and influences you won’t find anywhere else. San Antonio is also full of incredibly creative people, and that spirit comes through in the originality, passion, and personality behind its restaurants, cafés, and bars.
A few standout favourites across the city included:
- Curry Boys BBQ – a brilliant fusion of Texas barbecue and Thai curry flavours. Sounds like it shouldn’t work but it does, and it’s fantastic!
- La Panaderia – opened by two brothers who wanted to share their Mexican heritage and their love for baking; it has become a beloved San Antonio institution known for its artisan breads and pastries.
- Reese Bros Barbecue – we cycled there on our e‑bike tour and enjoyed some delicious tacos. They smoke their meat on-site and often sell out, so it’s worth getting there early. And make sure to leave room for dessert – they’re incredible.
- Pinkerton’s BBQ – award-winning barbecue that absolutely lives up to the hype. Arrive hungry—and be prepared for a queue, which only proves how good this place really is.
What tips do you have for travellers planning to visit san antonio?
One of the best ways to really get to know San Antonio is by booking a few tours with locals – whether they grew up in the city or chose it as their home, they’re full of lived experiences, personal stories, and fantastic recommendations. It’s the easiest way to uncover the layers of a destination, from hidden dining spots to neighbourhood histories you’d never find in a guidebook. Your Journeyscape Travel Expert can recommend a wide range of tours across San Antonio, from guided walks through historic sites and vibrant neighbourhoods to visits to wine‑tasting rooms and cultural hotspots.
It’s also worth combining time in the city with a stay on a nearby ranch for a completely different Texan experience. The surrounding Texas Hill Country offers traditional guest ranch stays for a taste of cowboy culture. All are within easy reach and make a perfect contrast to the energy and creativity of San Antonio.
Is there anything indispensable to pack or prepare for?
San Antonio is a wonderfully walkable city, so comfortable shoes are essential. Many of the best experiences come from simply exploring neighbourhoods on foot, whether that’s strolling along the River Walk or discovering local restaurants and cultural spots across the city. While light clothing works well for much of the year, San Antonio’s weather can be surprisingly changeable and sometimes unpredictable. The best approach is to dress in layers, so you can easily adjust to shifting temperatures throughout the day as you explore.
Sum up your trip in a sentence
An unforgettable Texas experience combining authentic ranch life, rich cultural heritage, incredible food and the vibrant atmosphere of San Antonio’s River Walk.
