Tales From the Road: O‘ahu & the Big Island Hawai‘i

25th March 2026

Hawaii Waterfall

Hawai‘i has long held a certain mystique – a far-flung archipelago where volcanic landscapes, deep-rooted culture and cinematic coastlines combine. For Travel Expert Rob Holmes, this long-anticipated journey ticked off a new U.S. state while revealing something far richer: a destination defined not just by its beauty, but by its spirit. Splitting his time between O‘ahu and the Island of Hawai‘i (Big Island), Rob experienced two distinct sides of the islands – from vibrant cityscapes and legendary surf to raw, untamed nature shaped by fire and time.

Tales from the Road – Hawaii

Which country and region did you visit?

I visited O‘ahu and the Big Island (the island of Hawai‘i), part of the Hawaiian archipelago in the USA. Together, they offer an incredible introduction to the diversity of the islands – from iconic beaches and surf culture to vast volcanic landscapes and deeply rooted Polynesian heritage.

How did you get there?

I flew from London Heathrow Airport to San Francisco, and then on to Honolulu on the island of O‘ahu. This is the main hub for flights into Hawai‘i, which is not accessible directly from the UK.

The journey took around 11 hours to San Francisco, followed by an additional 5.5 hours onwards to Honolulu. While it’s a long trip, it’s straightforward and well worth the effort. You could also route via Los Angeles, Seattle, Vancouver, Las Vegas or New York City, depending on airline and timing.

Where did you go?

I split my week between Waikīkī Beach and the beautiful North Shore on the island of O‘ahu, before heading to the Big Island to explore Kona, Waikoloa and Hilo.

This combination worked brilliantly, offering a balance of lively atmosphere, laid-back coastal living and dramatic, ever-changing natural scenery.

When did you go and how long for?

I went in early December for 8 days. It’s a fantastic time to visit, with warm temperatures, fewer crowds than peak holiday periods, and the added bonus of the early whale-watching season beginning.

Have you visited Hawaii before?

I have not – a completely new destination for me and another state ticked off the list. It certainly lived up to expectations and offered far more variety than I had imagined.

Which was your favourite…?

Place: The North Shore (O‘ahu). A really stunning contrast to the built-up and busy nature of Honolulu. The drive itself is memorable, passing through lush tropical forest, dramatic mountains and pristine beaches, often with roadside food trucks adding to the charm.

The North Shore is famed for its surf culture, but what stood out most was the relaxed, local feel. It’s far quieter, more authentic and gives a genuine sense of island life – meeting locals here was a real highlight.

Hotel: Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. This hotel sits beautifully on Kailua Bay – the very location where the Ironman World Championship takes place.

It blends history with a prime beachfront setting and is perfectly positioned in the heart of Kona, making it ideal for both relaxation and exploring the local area.

Excursion: Snorkelling with manta rays was an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience. By going out on a smaller canoe rather than a larger catamaran, the encounter feels far more personal and immersive.

Watching these huge, graceful creatures glide effortlessly through the water – often just inches away – is something I’ll never forget, particularly that first moment when one rises up to feed on plankton right in front of you.

What was your most memorable moment?

I took a walk through the lava tubes in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Rather than the desolate black rock landscape you might expect from a volcanic park, the surroundings are surprisingly lush and tropical, with birdlife and greenery all around.

It’s a fascinating contrast – walking through tunnels formed by ancient lava flows while surrounded by vibrant, living rainforest.

Were there any surprises along the way?

The pride in the provenance and ongoing history of the islands is very striking, especially when compared to other states. Hawai‘i may be the newest state, but it has an ancient and deeply rooted culture.

There’s a strong sense of identity and respect for heritage, and it’s clear that locals are passionate about preserving their traditions and environment. That cultural depth was a real and welcome surprise.

What tips do you have for travellers planning to visit the same destinations?

Whilst they’re beautiful, it would be a misuse of time and opportunity to visit Hawai‘i purely for the beaches. There is so much more to experience – from volcanoes and rainforests to wildlife and cultural encounters.

Do not try to rush. You always have to fly between islands, and to do it properly, you should visit at least two. Given the travel time from the UK and the sheer range of experiences, this is ideally a two-week destination.

Is there anything indispensable to pack or prepare for?

A sense of adventure and an open mind. Hawai‘i is a destination that rewards curiosity and exploration, and the more you embrace that, the more memorable your experience will be.

Any local snacks, dishes or drinks that should be sampled?

Hawaiian cuisine is a real melting pot of cultures. Poke bowls are a staple and are far fresher and more flavourful than anything typically found in the UK – an absolute must-try while on the islands.

Any restaurant or bar recommendations?

Restaurant – The Pig and The Lady – fantastic Vietnamese-inspired food with bold flavours and a great atmosphere.

Bar – Harbor House Kona – a true local favourite. Expect a relaxed, unfussy setting where fishermen bring in their catch, paired with generous schooners of local beer and excellent sunset views.

Sum up your trip in a sentence?

Bucket-list experiences in a varied, friendly and beautiful destination – and one that’s left me wanting to return and explore even more of the islands.
