Taos Holidays 2026 & 2027
Situated 70 miles north of Santa Fe, this laidback town in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains boasts some of New Mexico’s most significant Indigenous and Hispanic cultural sites.
Home to a unique multicultural heritage encompassing Native American, Spanish colonial and Anglo-American histories, Taos is a charming town filled with history, art and the breathtaking nature found across New Mexico’s high desert. Famous for the Taos Pueblo, the only living Native American community designated both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a US National Historic Landmark, and dated by archaeologists to be around 1,000 years old, visitors here will get to see the most complete pueblo in all of North America.
Originally established as a Spanish colony in the 1700s, and later an artist’s colony in the late 1800s after the adoption of New Mexico into the United States, Taos is also renowned for the legacy of the early Taos Society of Artists, which once attracted creative names like Ansel Adams, Georgia O’Keeffe and D.H. Lawrence (who’s ranch can be viewed just outside downtown).
Today, Taos has an exciting range of art museums and galleries, as well as other historical must-sees like the San Francisco de Asís Church, an enormous 18th-century adobe church, which has also provided much artistic inspiration, and the historic downtown which sits around a picturesque plaza.
Taos also boasts natural splendour, located just a short drive from the impressive Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, the 5th highest bridge in the US offering stunning views of the Rio Grande River, and the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains, which turn a brilliant red and pink during sunrise and sunset. Hiking enthusiasts will find plenty of trails around town, as well as opportunities for mountain biking and white water rafting.
