Devil’s Tower

A jaw-dropping geological formation that looms 1,200 feet above Wyoming’s rolling prairies, Devils Tower astounds with its otherworldly presence.

Staggering in size, this laccolithic butte juts straight into the air and is as impressive up close as it is seen on the horizon. The world’s finest example of columnar jointing, it features unique, claw-like marks up and down its sides that have given it the indigenous nickname of Bear Lodge. America’s first national monument, as dedicated by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, Devils Tower was only brought to the national conscience after featuring as the backdrop in Steven Spielberg’s 1977 film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Considered a sacred place by the Northern Plains Indians and local Kiowa Tribe, Devils Tower is nestled amongst some of the most beautiful land in the state, sitting above Wyoming’s eastern plains and surrounded by the beautiful forests of the Black Hills and the peaceful Belle Fourche River.

Ideally located for all kinds of recreation, Devils Tower is a mecca for hikers and rock climbers. Walk the surrounding lands and pause at the base, fondly known as Boulder Field, to sit down and take in the majesty of the monument. Thirteen acres wide, the base has stones as large as a bus, and is a fun climb for beginners. For advanced rock climbers, scaling the actual butte is a rewarding experience. Take your time and spend the night to gaze up at the stars – the vast campgrounds allow for some magnificent stargazing. And no matter how long you want to stay, make sure to stop by one of the towns in the surrounding area. Rich with history and outdoor gems, a pause in Sundance, Hulett or Pine Haven will give you an authentic glimpse into America’s frontier past.
