A haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with its unique blend of urban attractions and outdoor activities, Utah is an ideal destination for families, couples, and solo travellers alike. Whether you enjoy hiking, skiing, or simply want to explore the state’s many attractions, Utah has something to offer everyone. Read on to learn what you can discover on a trip to this incredible state.

Bryce Canyon National Park Utah

National Parks

Located in the southern half of Utah, and affectionately referred to as the Mighty Five, each park boasts distinct features, some of the most breath-taking landscapes one can see, and multiple opportunities for outdoor adventures, including hiking, camping, and scenic drives. Start with Arches National Park where one can see the largest proliferation of arches and natural bridges in the world over a 73,234-acre wonderland that’s been sculpted by wind and time. A hike to see the sun set through Delicate Arch is a must for any visitor.

Continue to nearby Canyonlands National Park to witness the rugged terrain of its deep canyons and towering mesas that extend as far as the eye can see. While there, take the easy Mesa Arch hike to see one of Utah’s most panoramic views.

For stunning vistas of red rock landscapes and towering cliffs go to Capitol Reef National Park. A popular film set for Hollywood; chances are you’ve already gotten a glimpse of its iconic geography in a Western film.

Then head on to Bryce Canyon National Park which features of miles of spires of rock. Recognised the world over, one can watch the golden hues of the stones change throughout the landscape as the sun rises and sets.

Last but not least, find yourself in Zion National Park. Known for its stunning scenery, follow the Virgin River through Zion Canyon to see the lush greenery contrast with the bright orange cliffs, or walk through The Narrows to find yourself in an otherworldly place. For the adventurous, hike the steep Angel’s Landing.

Natural Wonders

Utah is home to an exceptional amount of natural wonders and to some of the world’s most impressive collections of fossils. 150 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed here, as well as many indigenous groups, and their fossils and petroglyphs are still embedded in the rocks to this day. Much of this incredible history can be explored at Dinosaur National Monument, which covers over 210,000 acres of archaeological digs, and Jurassic National Monument, which lies at the site of the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry and contains the densest concentration of Jurassic dinosaur fossils ever found.

Utah’s many state parks offer nature that rivals the Mighty 5 and with fewer crowds, they are well worth a visit. Start with either Kodachrome Basin or Dead Horse Point State Park – each offer stunning red stone scenery and beautiful mountain biking and hiking trails. Then, check out the almost surrealist rock formations at Goosenecks State Park. Or, for those looking for some water to swim in and cool off, Sand Hollow boasts a tranquil turquoise reservoir and rust-coloured sand dunes.

But that’s not all. From the Great Salt Lake, the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River found just outside Salt Lake City to the famed Timpanogos Cave National Monument and the stunning Fifth Water Hot Springs, visitors will find both adventure and relaxation during their Utah experience.

All throughout Utah’s rugged terrain, from the Mighty 5 to the many state parks and up into the Wasatch and the Uinta Mountains, visitors will find countless hiking trails and innumerable opportunities for mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, horse riding, backpacking and off roading.

Utah’s numerous lakes and rivers, including the Colorado and Green Rivers, provide opportunities for water sports, such as kayaking and rafting, while the multiple reservoirs and lakes found throughout Utah’s numerous state parks offer opportunities for boating and fishing too.

City Attractions

Utah has breath taking nature, but it also has interesting cities and cosy towns that are well worth a visit. Salt Lake City, the state’s capital, offers a variety of attractions, from the exceptional Natural History Museum of Utah and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts to some of the most unique examples of architecture in the Western USA and the world-famous Tabernacle Choir. Downtown Salt Lake City also boasts an excellent culinary scene as well as boutique shopping, entertainment venues and the popular City Creek Center.

Nearby, the former silver mining town of Park City is now a thriving year-round resort town, with a well-preserved historic district, excellent dining, shopping, and over 400 miles of trails for hiking and biking in the summer, and skiing and snowboarding in the winter.

Visitors should also explore some of the state’s smaller towns, like Moab which offers a laid-back atmosphere, renowned art galleries and a welcoming community.

Every winter from December to April, northern Utah turns into a winter wonderland. The state is famous for its world-class ski resorts, including Deer Valley, Park City, and Snowbird, which offer some of the greatest snow for winter sports in the whole of the United States as well as panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Visitors of all levels can enjoy a wide range of trails and terrain for skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Stargazing

For those interested in stargazing and astronomy, Utah has the highest concentration of certified International Dark Sky Parks and Communities in the whole of the United States making it an ideal destination for visitors interested in this alone.

From northern Utah to southern Utah, many state parks and monuments as well as the Mighty 5 offer minimal light pollution, making it easy to see the stars and constellations. Visitors can attend ranger-led stargazing events and astronomy programs within these locations and at the University of Utah’s Observatory, which specialises in astronomical research.

While Utah boasts no less than 26 certified Dark Sky locations, there are some we’d highly recommend visiting on your trip such as Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks; Dead Horse Point, East Canyon, Goblin Valley and Goosenecks State Parks; Natural Bridges National Monument and the Dark Sky community of Moab.

Scenic Drives

Utah is home to many scenic drives, and is easily one of the best states to have a road trip. The state’s scenic drives offer spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes, including mountains, canyons, rock formations and other unique geological features especially as visitors can drive through the state’s many national parks and monuments, including Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park.

Two scenic drives which are an absolute must include the La Sal Loop, which offers incredible views over Moab and Canyonlands National Park and the Nebo Loop National Scenic Byway which take visitors through the Uinta National Forest to the Utah Valley and the tallest mountain in the Wasatch Range, Mount Nebo.

Utah’s scenic drives are suitable for all types of vehicles, from cars to RVs to motorcycles, so there’s no limit to how you can choose to explore.

Salt Lake City has excellent eateries and Park City has plenty to offer as well. The state is famous for its fry sauce, a tasty condiment made from a mixture of ketchup and mayonnaise, and something visitors will be sure to come across during their visit.

Utah’s many farmers’ markets offer a wide range of fresh local produce, meats, and artisanal products, and most cities and towns are home to microbreweries so a refreshing local pint will always be within reach.
