Chesapeake Bay, Capital Region

Product Manager Dominique Kotsias reports on her recent trip, including kayaking with dolphins in Virginia Beach, exploring iconic Washington DC and feasting on crab in Annapolis.

“Everyone should experience this beautiful region at some point, starting in DC and taking in the beautiful countryside before heading to the ocean. It’s brimming with history, an abundance of outdoor activities and some really scenic drives. This region has something for absolutely everyone and all ages – I left just wanting to go back!” – Dominique Kotsias

Which country and region did you visit?
USA – The Capital Region.

How did you get there?
I flew from London to Washington DC, then drove a hire car from place to place.

Where did you go?
Washington DC, Annapolis, Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg and Shenandoah National Park.

Have you visited the Capital Region before?
No. It was my first time but I’ve always been fascinated by the history of this region.

Which was your favourite…?

Place: Virginia Beach – it’s miles long and the perfect place to relax. The boardwalk is lined with fantastic restaurants serving up scrumptious seafood.

Hotel: Hyatt Place Virginia Beach Oceanfront – beautiful, bright rooms and the hotel is right on the beach with great views from my private balcony.

Excursion: Chesapean Kayak with Wild Dolphins Eco Tour – I have never been so close to wild dolphins! It was a real thrill kayaking among them off Virginia Beach. They were so friendly and playful, swimming within a couple of metres of us.

What was your most memorable moment?
Kayaking with the wild dolphins, it was such an incredible experience being out at sea and seeing them swimming around me.

Were there any surprises along the way?
Yes. As we approached Shenandoah National Park we could see the incredible scenery, then out of nowhere a tropical storm came in and everything went foggy and suddenly you could see anything. It made me realise you definitely need two days there in case you miss a day due to the weather!

What tips do you have for travellers planning to visit the same destinations?
I would go at the end of summer when the weather is warm but not too hot. You have to take in Chesapeake Bay and eat Maryland Crab – its not only delicious but an incredible experience! This whole region is just amazing, I went there with no expectations and realised how diverse it is – from stunning landscapes to a region full of history from the Civil War. Of course capital city Washington DC is one of the most beautiful cities in the US and has so many free museums with fascinating exhibits. The region has something for everyone, and all ages – stunning countryside, beautiful mountain ranges, incredible beaches and great food and wine. There is no denying that you are in the Capital region of the USA, as its so full of history.

Is there anything indispensable to pack or prepare for?
Layers of clothing for the outdoor experiences and some good walking shoes!

Any local snacks, dishes or drinks that should be sampled?
Maryland Crab is a must and oysters are in abundance there! Plus the wine is very good in this region.

Any restaurant or bar recommendations?
Fisherman’s Inn and Crab Deck in the Kent Narrows, about 15 minutes’ drive from Annapolis. It’s stunning – famous for crab, right on the water and probably one of my highlights of the trip.

Sum up your trip in a sentence?
It was such a special trip that made me want to go back and experience it with my family again!
