Renowned for its stunning desert landscapes, rich border history and world-class green Chile pepper, Las Cruces is a lesser known destination in the American West that offers fantastic hiking, a vibrant creative community and easy access to some of New Mexico’s most beautiful natural wonders.

The second-largest city in New Mexico, Las Cruces is spread out across multiple vibrant neighbourhoods, but the walkable, compact downtown is where much of the city’s vibrations can be found. From theatrical entertainment and dining to unique museums and local artists galleries, the Main Street is also home to one of the USA’s nationally recognised outdoor markets: The Farmers and Crafts Market, which spans an impressive seven city blocks and hosts vendors selling exquisite art, jewellery, crafts, produce, baked goods, lunches and more.

Culinary enthusiasts will find much to enjoy in the bold local cuisine and freshly-grown produce—the surrounding Mesilla Valley grows some of the USA’s finest Chile peppers and pecan nuts—and both feature on menus around the city.

Las Cruces is also worth visiting as a base for its proximity to the iconic white gypsum dunes of White Sands National Park, and for its own scenic nature right on its doorstep. The city is surrounded by Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument which covers almost half a million acres and offers spectacular trails for all levels of hikers, mountain bikers and horse rider–not to mention incredible views. A short drive further also reveals easy trails and local birdlife at Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park.

And last but not least, visitors to Las Cruces will find that right next door to the city lies an old Western town known as Historic Old Mesilla. For history enthusiasts a trip here reveals a 19^th-century old plaza, adobe buildings and the area’s famous Basilica de San Albino.
