With streets shaded by majestic oaks draped in Spanish moss, historic buildings, squares and gardens in every corner, and the sweet smell of magnolias and azaleas in the air, few American cities can compete with the innate natural beauty of one of the oldest cities in the United States: Savannah. Founded in 1733, Savannah was one of the first planned cities in America and is designated as one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the country.

The architecture astounds, whether you’re strolling the new Plant Riverside – filled with amazing restaurants, an amphitheatre and nightly live entertainment – or walking through the heart of Savannah’s downtown district, you’ll see an impressive range of styles including Federal, Victorian Regency, Italianate and both Greek and Gothic Revival. Savannah was built on grids with squares and these squares have become emblematic of the city with no less than 22 of them offering verdant landscapes, stately sculptures and plenty of room to relax or have a picnic. Greenery is a major feature of this charming city and a trip to Savannah wouldn’t be complete without an afternoon spent admiring the city’s breathtakingly beautiful 30-acre garden, Forsyth Park, the otherworldly Wormsloe State Historic Site, or the stunning monuments and setting of Bonaventure Cemetery.

Savannah has plenty to indulge in too with excellent dining, shopping and nightlife. From quaint brewpubs to award-winning bakeries, restaurants and ice cream shops, you’ll find yourself spoiled for choice anytime you feel peckish. Shopping is delightful with options ranging from curated boutiques and antique stores to outdoor markets. Art galleries are aplenty, and they sell their outstanding works too.

If you are looking for more to do outdoors, Savannah’s coastal location – solidifying its status as one of the USA’s busiest ports – offers plenty for beach lovers. Take a short drive along Savannah’s outskirts to the idyllic Tybee Island, known as “Savannah’s beach”, for blissful sunbathing, walking, biking, sailing and splashing in the rolling Atlantic waves.
