Eaton Washington DC

Part hotel, part cultural institution, Eaton DC is unlike anything else in the city. Founded by Katharine Lo – daughter of the Langham Group’s chairman, with rather different ideas about what a hotel should stand for – it is Washington’s most unapologetically creative property, and one of the most interesting boutique hotels in the country. If you want marble lobbies and presidential portraits, there are plenty of those nearby.

Eaton DC occupies a corner of downtown K Street that feels genuinely separate from the usual DC hotel circuit. The 209 rooms come with Bluetooth record players, curated vinyl collections, Himalayan salt lamps, and artwork that earns its wall space. It’s the kind of room you actually want to spend time in.

Beyond the rooms, Eaton operates more like a cultural campus. There’s a Michelin-guide restaurant (Michele’s, French-American, from chef Matt Baker of Gravitas), a literary cocktail bar called Allegory with a beautiful original mural by local artist Erik Thor Sandberg, Wild Days rooftop – a Parisian winter garden meets underground concert venue – Baker’s Daughter cafe for third-wave coffee and Ayurvedic drinks, a 50-person cinema, a radio station, and a co-working club for 370 members. The wellness studio runs yoga, reiki, infrared sauna, sound baths, and acupuncture.

Our expert's opinion

“We love Eaton DC for doing something impressively rare - building a luxury hotel with a real point of view. The excellent restaurant, the rooftop music venue, the radio station: it's not trying to be a hotel that acts like a cultural space, it just is one.”
