Hawai’i FAQs

Find out all you need to know about visiting Hawai’i.

When is the best time to visit Hawai’i?

Hawai’i is renowned for its warm, sunny weather, and with only minor changes in temperature throughout the year, the islands can be visited at any time. The climate in Hawai’i is very consistent and there are technically only two seasons in the state: summer, which lasts from May to October and winter, which typically runs from mid-November until April. The average daytime temperature in summer is around 29°C and the average daytime temperature in winter is around 24°C, ensuring pleasant conditions no matter when you travel. Nights tend to cool off with summer lows around 20°C and winter lows around 17°C.

The islands boast an incredible range of diverse micro-environments thanks in part to the shielding effect of the archipelago’s volcanic mountains, the differences in elevation and the high-pressure zones that come off the north Pacific. Westward sides of the islands tend to be dry and windward (or northeastern) sides tend to be wet, but that’s what creates Hawai’i’s lush, tropical environment, and signature trade winds. If you are worried about the heat, the good news is there is almost always a cooling breeze from the palms, though come June and July they usually come to a halt and bring hot, humid weather.

The wettest months across the islands are from November to March, but winter rains don’t tend to disrupt holiday plans. Unless you encounter the odd torrential rainstorm, showers are brief and the ground dries again in just a few minutes. Also, since the weather is very localised, if it’s raining where you are, chances are you’ll find warm sun just a short way away. Hurricane season in Hawai’i lasts from June to November, but the state-of-the-art warning system across the state ensures that residents and visitors will never be caught off guard.

What is the official language of Hawai’i?

English and Hawaiian are the official languages spoken in the Hawaiian Islands. A form of pidgin English, referred to locally as simply “Pidgin” is also spoken across the islands, but only in informal contexts.

How do I manage my travel money in Hawai’i?

The United States Dollar (USD). Cash, credit, and debit cards are widely accepted, and cash machines are easy to access.

What places combine well with Hawai’i?

Hawai’i is located in the Pacific Ocean off the West Coast of the United States making it easy to reach from places like California and the Pacific Northwest. Direct flights from Southwestern cities like Phoenix, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City are also available should you want to diversify your stay.
