Earning its moniker as the “staging area” or starting point for the Great Western Cattle Drive of the 1800s, Bandera is a living monument to the cowboy way of life that is still very much alive today in this part of Texas. A town steeped in Western history just an hour outside of San Antonio, it’s not uncommon to see horses tied to hitching posts with motorcycles parked beside them, or a horse-drawn wagon blending in with the town’s Main Street traffic. Bandera might be small, but its cowboy spirit is larger than life, and seen firsthand in the many guest and working ranches around town. You can pass through the main street of leather shops, general stores, restaurants and music-filled honky tonks, or you can muck in overnight and experience the working life of a real cowboy. Participate in daily horse rides, fix fences around the ranch, help herd the Longhorn cattle and enjoy a well-deserved cookout come nightfall.
