Offering unforgettable experiences of learning and adventure, the incredible 500-mile Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway travels through dense, mountainous forests, diverse wetlands, clear streams, pastoral ranches and stunning volcanic landscapes while simultaneously tracing Gold Rush history in the old mining towns that are dotted along the way. One of the best places in the world to witness the geologic activity in the Pacific Ocean’s Ring of Fire, the highway takes you past all five volcanoes in the region: Crater Lake, Mount Shasta, Lava Beds National Monument, Medicine Lake and Mount Lassen. Not to mention the countless examples of expansive lava flows, dramatic caves, bubbling mud pots and steaming fumaroles that still exist in the area.

Drive the full length in 5 to 7 hours or take your time stopping at the national parks and charming former mining towns along the route. Notable pitstops include Fort Klamath and Klamath Falls.
