Traditional Lei-Making Class
Experience the deeper meaning of lei-making in a two hour workshop guided by native Hawaiians.
Leis are recognised worldwide as a symbol of Hawai’i, and during this 2-hour class, you’ll learn why they are not just a simple craft but a hands-on cultural practice. Considered a common part of everyday life in the Hawaiian Islands, these garlands are typically made of fresh Hawai’i-grown flowers or foliage, and are worn around the neck and/or on the head. During this workshop, you’ll learn when leis are given, what different flowers and materials symbolise and why creating one by hand carries lasting significance.
Your visit will take place on a working Big Island ranch, where you’ll get to learn about Hawaiian farming practices and the relationship between caring for the land and everyday life, before gathering the fresh natural materials with your guide to craft your own lei. You’ll gain insight into the customs and values woven into this tradition and leave with your very own handmade lei.
