Hike Diamond Head
Take an easy, rewarding hike up to the rim of one of Hawaii’s iconic cone volcanoes.
Diamond Head, known as Lē’ahi in Hawaiian, is a 760-foot tuff crater that sits along the Honolulu skyline just beyond Waikīkī. Its iconic silhouette is one of Hawaii’s most famous landmarks, and it is a popular hiking destination that offers panoramic views of Waikīkī and O’ahu’s south shore.
Formed around 300,000 years ago from a single, explosive eruption, this crater was originally used as a strategic military outlook in the early 1900s, before becoming a designated National Natural Landmark in 1968.
Today, Diamond Head’s much-loved hiking trail is spread out over a well-marked 1.6 mile return trip and includes two staircases totalling 175 steps, tunnels and old military bunkers. The stunning views that greet you at the top are well worth the effort, and this trail can easily be done without a guide. However, pre-booking an entry reservation is essential.
