Perhaps Hawai’i’s most charming island, Maui is a place visitors return to again and again, and it’s not hard to see why. With beautiful beaches, postcard-worthy greenery and lively yet laidback towns for whiling the day and night away, Maui is a top vacation destination.

Famed for its breathtaking beaches, Maui’s visitors will be spoiled for choice as they travel around the island. Among the best are the picturesque Kapalua Beach, Big Beach (also known as Makena Beach) with its long, wide shoreline, La Perouse Bay with its untouched beauty, and Ka’anapali Beach on the west side, ever popular with tourists and local families. Its golden sands are walkable, resort-accessible and close to excellent shopping and dining. Maui also boasts unique red and black sand beaches which are worth visiting merely for their stunning shores.

There’s plenty to do in the ‘Valley Isle’ and visitors will find more than enough to fill several days. A big attraction of the islands is the spectacular Haleakalā National Park, home to Maui’s huge, dormant shield volcano. Drive up to summit to capture a painted sunrise at the Visitor Centre, then hike or drive to the top of Maui’s highest peak. The Pipiwai Trail is a must for hikers, and the otherworldly Haleakalā Crater not to be missed.

‘Iao Valley State Monument is another place well worth visiting for its incredible greenery and walkable hikes, and no visit to Maui is complete without a drive along the island’s famed Road to Hanā. Stretching along the coastline from Kahului to the old town of Hanā, the road offers many exquisite places for stopping off: walk a forest trail to a secluded waterfall, like Waikini Falls, stop at roadside truck for some fresh banana bread or sweet pineapple, or visit the Maui Tropical Plantation to see just how local agriculture thrives.

Stop in Maui’s charming towns too for delicious food, Hawaiian art and local boutique shopping. From the historic town of Pā’ia with its fun surf shops and delicious Mana Foods deli to Makawao in the Upcountry, known for its delightful high street and Hawaiian cowboy or ‘paniolo’ culture – make sure to also head to the south shore’s Kihei for some of the best food-truck style coconut shrimp and rice. A walk along the coastline here between the months of November and April might even guarantee a whale sighting from shore. After dark, head to the Maui Brewing Company to sample some of Hawai’i’s finest craft beers.
