Līhu’e
The commercial centre of the island of Kaua’i, this laidback seaside town is also an important cultural and historical area tracing a long history back in time.
Home to Kaua’i’s main airport (the Līhu’e Airport) and Nāwiliwili Harbour, the island’s major commercial shipping centre and cruise ship port, Līhu’e is both the government and commercial centre of Hawai’i’s ‘Garden Isle’.
While many visitors to Kaua’i merely pass through Līhu’e towards other towns on the island, Līhu’e does have a variety of cultural and historical sites as well as natural wonders to explore. For anyone curious about Kaua’i’s past, there are multiple locations well worth visiting including, ‘Alekoko Fishpond, a 1,000-year-old aquaculture reservoir; Grove Farm Homestead Museum, a 100-acre sugar plantation museum established in 1864 which provides a fascinating look at Kaua’i’s plantation past; Kilohana Estate, a restored 1930s-era plantation estate renowned for hosting the island’s most iconic luau; and Kaua’i Museum, which features wonderful collections from the artisans of Kaua’i and Ni’ihau.
Culture and history aside, Līhu’e is also home to Kalapakī Beach, a popular surfing and swimming spot for both locals and tourists, and the breathtaking Wailua Falls, situated just north of the town.
