Kona Tiki Hotel

Built in the 1950s and proudly unchanged in spirit, Kona Tiki sits along Ali’i Drive a mile south of Kailua-Kona, perched directly on the rocky shoreline where waves occasionally break against the seawall and send spray into the oceanfront saltwater pool. It’s one of the most affordable oceanfront properties in all of Hawai’i, and one of the most characterful.

Kona Tiki is the only hotel in Kona where every room has a private oceanfront deck: a simple but extraordinary distinction. Rooms are small, simply furnished, and deliberately relaxed: ceiling fans rather than air conditioning, trade winds doing the work the island has always done. Mini-fridges, cosy tropical decor, and no televisions or phones keep the focus where it belongs – on the water. Upper-floor rooms include kitchenettes, and a continental breakfast of fruit, bagels and coffee is served poolside each morning.

The communal life of the hotel is part of its appeal. Each evening, staff enlist guests to help light the tiki torches and blow a conch shell to mark the sunset; a small ritual that captures everything Kona Tiki does well. Beach gear, snorkel equipment and bodyboards are available to borrow, and the warm, knowledgeable staff are generous with local tips.

Honl’s Beach is a short walk away, and downtown Kailua-Kona, with its restaurants, coffee shops, and historic Hulihe’e Palace, is close enough to feel accessible without ever intruding on the tranquil setting.
