Hawai’i’s capital and largest city, Honolulu is a laid-back, multicultural metropolis that offers something for every visitor – from history and culture buffs to lovers of sun and sand, and foodies too – there’s plenty to see and do.

Start with the island’s renowned Waikīkī Beach. Its golden sands, turquoise waters and views of Lē’ahi (Diamond Head) Crater are legendary. It’s the main tourist district, but its beauty and perfect waves make it popular with the locals too. Here you can learn to surf, go snorkelling, canoeing and sailing, or sit back with a cocktail at Duke’s – named after the celebrated surfer and first Hawaiian Olympic medallist – to watch the vibrant nightly sunsets.

Honolulu is an outdoors city with plenty of opportunities to explore the local nature. Make the easy hike up the iconic Diamond Head (Lē’ahi) Crater, or challenge yourself with the Koko Crater Trail. Mānoa Falls, which lies in the inland valley offers beautiful rain forest and trails, while Hanauma Bay, on the eastern side of the city, is a must for its beautiful beach and incredible nature preserve.

Culture lovers will appreciate Honolulu’s multiple historic landmarks and museums, including the only royal residence found on US soil, ‘Iolani Palace. More living history can be found at the Bishop Museum, which offers the most comprehensive overview of Hawaiian culture in the islands, while the Honolulu Museum of Art boasts an impressive collection of Pacific, Asian, American and European art.

Downtown Honolulu with its historic Chinatown is of architectural interest and an excellent place for award-winning restaurants as well as up-and-coming nightlife. Dining across the city is varied and delightful, and other hotspots include the neighbourhoods of Kaka’ako and Kaimuki. Last but not least, Honolulu offers one of the best open air shopping experiences in the whole of North America, so don’t leave without a trip to the Ala Moana Shopping Center.
