Bespoke Sleeping Bear Dunes and Traverse City Holidays

Sleeping Bear Dunes are among the most beautiful stretches of sand in the USA with spectacular hikes, shimmering lakes, historic islands and lighthouses, while nearby Traverse City is famous for its cherry festival, wineries and winter sports.

The Great Lakes are so vast that they often feel like oceans and nowhere more so than the pristine sands of Sleeping Bear Dunes. One of the most beautiful stretches of sand in North America, these dunes are backed by verdant forest and spectacular inland lakes.

The protected Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore extends over 35 miles of Lake Michigan’s eastern shore, and the most popular dune climb rises some 85 metres, overlooking the shimmering Glen Lake. Take a ranger-led hike, cycle along the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, drive the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, then visit Glen Haven Historical Village and the maritime museums.

The most popular boat trips are to the historic village on North Manitou Island and lighthouse of South Manitou Island, which dates from 1871. Point Betsie Lighthouse is another historic highlight on the southern end of the park near the stunning Crystal Lake.

Traverse City is more than just the gateway to Sleeping Bear Dunes, famous for its week-long cherry festival in July. The city is surrounded by many award-winning wineries, so a vineyard and tasting tour is highly recommended. In winter, Traverse City transforms into a busy ski resort with slopes on Mount Holiday and Hickory Hills, while the popular nearby resort of Crystal Mountain is 45 minutes’ drive away.
