Mackinac Island Holidays 2026 & 2027
Mackinac Island has been a popular, idyllic getaway for over a century, renowned for its peaceful scenery of limestone bluffs, forests and beaches.
The native Ojibwa and Odawa peoples considered this tiny island measuring just four square miles on the north-west edge of Lake Huron to be a sacred place where life began, and it’s easy to see why when exploring Mackinac Island’s beautiful landscapes.
Nowadays, tourists come here to enjoy sailing, cycling and hiking in a peaceful, traffic-free environment. Over 80% of Mackinac (pronounced Mackin-aw) is protected in the state park with development restricted beyond the small harbour town. Cars are not permitted, so the island is a delightful step back in time with horse-drawn carriages and bikes.
The island is best explored on foot or bike, but sailing, kayaking and sunset cruises are also popular. A geological highlight of the island is Arch Rock, 45 metres high above the Straits of Mackinac, while Fort Holmes, constructed by the British during the American Revolution, is the historic highlight and oldest building in Michigan. The vast Butterfly House and small Butterfly Conservatory are both worth visiting to see countless species.
The island is also famous for its fudge, sold in shops in town where you can also see the fudge being made. There’s a popular fudge festival on the island every August which makes for a delicious visit if you happen to be in town.
