The Door Peninsula in the west of Lake Michigan is renowned for 300 miles of shoreline lined with lighthouses, rugged rock formations and cherry orchards.

The Door Peninsula north of Milwaukee has beautiful coastal scenery with 11 historic lighthouses and five state parks, ideal for hiking, cycling, swimming and fishing. The straits between the peninsula and Washington Island gave the region its original name – Death’s Door – because of the regular shipwrecks that occurred here.

The town of Ephraim is one of the best bases to explore, next to the largest protected area in Peninsula State Park. The park’s 3,775 acres have hiking and cycling trails through the White Cedar Forest, as well as the historic Eagle Bluff Lighthouse and Museum.

It’s worth taking the ferry to Washington Island north of the peninsula for its smooth limestone Schoolhouse Beach, lavender fields and Norwegian-style Stavkirke Church.

Door County has over 2,000 acres of cherry orchards. The best time to see the blossoms is mid-May to early June, while picking season is mid-July to mid-August. Try local specialities such as cherry wine, cherry pie and a range of sweet treats.
