Florida’s Atlantic Coast is a haven for sun-seekers with a cluster of popular resorts boasting long sandy beaches.

Fort Lauderdale is just half an hour north of Miami, famous for its luxurious beachside homes, shopping on Las Olas Boulevard, canals filled with yachts, and a landscaped promenade.

Nearby Palm Beach is perched on a tiny island, renowned for its Gilded Age architecture, including the Flagler Museum at the palatial Whitehall, as well as luxury boutiques along Worth Avenue.

East of Orlando is one of the most iconic places in Florida – Cape Canaveral, site of NASA’s rocket launches since the 1950s. The Kennedy Space Centre is unmissable with the original shuttle Atlantis as well as Apollo spacecraft, a fascinating exhibition on the Race to the Moon and simulator rides.

The north-east coast of Florida is relatively undiscovered but worth exploring for its historic attractions. St Augustine is actually the USA’s oldest continuously inhabited city, founded in 1565 by the Spanish long before the Pilgrims arrived. The well-preserved Castillo de San Marcos dates from the 1670s and is one of the finest historical monuments to Spanish influence in the Sunshine State. The Lightner Museum occupies just one of the city’s extravagant Gilded Age hotels built by railroad pioneer Henry Flagler.
