Located in southeastern British Columbia, the Kootenay Rockies is a region of extraordinary scale and beauty, where soaring snow-capped mountain ranges give way to turquoise lakes, ancient glaciers and deep, forested valleys. Four of British Columbia’s national parks lie within the Kootenay Rockies, alongside around 75 provincial parks—and there is wilderness at every turn. Golden, nestled where the Columbia and Kicking Horse rivers meet, is a classic mountain town and an ideal base for exploring the surrounding peaks. Yoho, Glacier and Banff National Parks are all within easy reach, while closer to home, there are abundant trails, rivers and wildlife to discover.

Few places capture the drama of the Rockies quite like Yoho National Park. The exquisite Emerald Lake shimmers beneath towering peaks, while Takkakaw Falls, one of Canada’s highest waterfalls, drops dramatically into the valley below. At the Burgess Shale, the history stretches back more than 500 million years, displaying one of the world’s most remarkable fossil beds.

Around Kootenay Lake, the pace changes. Sitting on the lake’s shores, Nelson is a relaxed hillside town filled with colourful heritage buildings, independent shops, galleries, cafés and restaurants. The lake and mountains provide a natural playground for boating, hiking and cycling, while nearby ski areas keep the adventure going through winter. More than just somewhere to explore, Nelson offers visitors somewhere to linger in breathtaking surroundings.

Further west, Revelstoke sits between the Selkirk and Monashee mountains, surrounded by some of British Columbia’s wildest landscapes. A natural draw for skiers, climbers, mountain bikers and anyone with a taste for adventure, summer brings trails, rivers and wildlife while winter blankets the mountains in quality powder. Nearby Glacier National Park extends the wilderness, while the warm mineral waters of nearby Canyon Hot Springs offers a restorative pause.
