Prince William Sound is a spectacular addition to a tailor-made Alaska holiday, encompassing 10,000 square miles of protected glaciers, inlets, islands and fjords surrounded by towering mountains and lush temperate rainforest.
An unforgettable highlight of this region is watching huge chunks of ice crash from glaciers into the deep blue waters. The most famous is the immense Columbia Glacier, which has unfortunately been retreating since the 1980’s due to climate change.
The rugged coastline and surrounding temperate rainforests of Chugach National Forest are home to black bears, moose, Dall sheep and more than 200 bird species, while the bays and fjords are inhabited by humpback whales, orcas, otters, sea lions and seals.
Whittier and Valdez are the best bases to explore the marine parks of Prince William Sound on day cruises or kayaking excursions. Whittier is accessible from Anchorage by road through the longest tunnel in North America.
There are some fantastic hikes around Whittier, including the two-mile Horsetail Falls and the spectacular Portage Glacier. Another highlight is the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center with 200 acres inhabited by rescued animals including brown bears, moose, bison and wolves.
Valdez’s harbour is particularly picturesque and the town has several interesting museums on both indigenous and Gold Rush history.
