BEST TIME TO VISIT ALASKA

April to May

Late spring and early summer bring long days, crisp air, and fresh greenery across the interior. This is a wonderful time for quieter trails, active wildlife, and excellent visibility around glaciers and mountain ranges.

June to August

The height of summer offers warm (albeit wetter) conditions, energetic wildlife, and the famous extended daylight that Alaska is known for. Coastal excursions, rail journeys, and national park visits all feel at their most vibrant, making it a fantastic time to visit.

One thing to note, though, is that the summer months tend to be busier, as more people seek to take advantage of the longer days and milder weather.

September to early October

Autumn arrives quickly, turning the tundra deep shades of red and gold. Crowds thin, temperatures cool, and there’s a growing chance of northern lights in the evening. It’s an atmospheric time for photographers and slower-paced travellers.

Late October to March

From October through to March, Alaska enters its quiet season. Daylight hours shorten sharply, temperatures drop well below 0°C (often to -20°C in the far north), and snow or icy conditions become the norm in many areas.

This period suits travellers who enjoy the hushed beauty of winter, the aurora borealis activity, and fewer crowds, provided they are prepared for colder temperatures and more limited access to remote regions.
