Established as a railroad stop in 1881, Van Horn is a small desert town that serve as a gateway to West Texas outdoor adventures.

Known as “The Crossroads of the Texas Mountain Trail”, Van Horn is a hub for travellers, sitting at the intersection of several modern routes passing through West Texas. An ideal pit stop on the way to Big Bend National Park, the town has plenty to offer travellers – especially those passing through for more than a night.  

Home to fascinating pioneer history, Van Horn boasts one of the most renowned historic hotels in West Texas: Hotel El Capitan. The town also features the Clark Hotel Museum which showcases artefacts from the town’s former saloon, pioneer and railroad history. Local bars and restaurants have a cosy, quaint feel, offering a slower pace driven by Texan hospitality.  

Outside of Van Horn, visitors will find surprising natural beauty. The town is well-located for scenic drives along the Texas Mountain Trail and is just an hour away from the stunning scenery of Guadalupe Mountains National Park, which sits above the vast Chihuahuan Desert of West Texas. Home to Texas’ highest peak, the park is known for its bright white Salt Basin Dunes, fossilised reef mountains and wildlife-rich grasslands – not to mention its beautiful hiking trails.
