Tales from the Road: California

Sonoma Valley

My recent travels took me to California, USA, where I embarked on a seven-night journey immersing myself in the dynamic culture and stunning scenery of three distinct regions: the lively metropolis of San Francisco, the picturesque coastal town of Monterey, and the serene, vineyard-dotted landscapes of Sonoma County. Throughout the week, I enjoyed everything from world-class wine tasting and iconic sightseeing excursions to sampling gourmet cuisine and unwinding in luxurious hotels. The trip perfectly balanced adventure, relaxation, and indulgence, delivering an experience that catered to every sense.

Which country and region did you visit?

I visited California in the United States, focusing my itinerary on three key areas: the charming seaside destination of Monterey, the bustling and culturally rich city of San Francisco, and the tranquil wine country of Sonoma County, including the welcoming city of Santa Rosa. Each region brought its own unique atmosphere and highlights, making for a memorable and varied holiday.

How did you get there?

Travel was pleasantly straightforward thanks to direct flights into San Francisco International Airport. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a dedicated driver who stayed with us for the duration of the trip, taking the hassle out of navigating between destinations. Having a local driver not only made the transfers seamless but also allowed us to relax and enjoy the scenery as we moved from city to coast to countryside.

Where did you go?

Our Californian adventure spanned Monterey, San Francisco, and Sonoma County, including Santa Rosa. Each destination showcased its own personality: Monterey boasted breathtaking ocean views and a laid-back vibe; San Francisco buzzed with iconic landmarks and vibrant neighbourhoods; Sonoma County offered peaceful vineyards and charming small towns. This combination made for a well-rounded exploration of the region, with plenty of opportunities to soak up both natural beauty and local culture.

When did you go and how long for?

The trip took place in early to mid-November, spanning seven nights in total. This timing proved perfect, as the autumn season brought cooler temperatures ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities, along with fewer crowds at popular attractions and wineries, allowing for a more relaxed and personal experience.

Have you visited California before?

I’d previously spent time in San Francisco, so I was familiar with its energetic atmosphere and iconic sights. However, this was my first opportunity to discover the laid-back charm of Monterey and the tranquil beauty of Sonoma County. Both places exceeded expectations and offered fresh perspectives on what California has to offer beyond its famous cityscapes.

Which was your favourite…?

Place

The vineyards of Sonoma County truly stole the show for me. Stretching across rolling hills and framed by stunning scenery, they rival Napa Valley not only in their beauty but also in the warmth and hospitality of their people. The peaceful atmosphere, combined with the opportunity to taste exceptional wines right where they’re produced, made this area unforgettable and a must-visit for anyone seeking a tranquil escape.

Excursion

Wine tasting in Sonoma was an absolute standout. Our knowledgeable guide shared fascinating insights into the winemaking process and local history, elevating the experience far beyond simply sampling wines. Generous pours were paired expertly with a selection of artisan cheeses, pâtés, and fresh fruits sourced from nearby farms, making it both an educational and thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

Hotel

Le Petit Pali on Ocean Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea was easily my favourite hotel of the trip. This luxury boutique property offered a seamless blend of sophistication and comfort, with every detail thoughtfully considered. The room came stocked with treats like champagne, freshly roasted coffee beans, cakes, and cookies, while the daily wine and cheese hour provided a lovely opportunity to unwind and mingle with other guests. Its central location made exploring the town effortless.

What was your most memorable moment?

One experience that stands out was riding in a driverless taxi around San Francisco. Although it wasn’t on the official itinerary, it was a spontaneous decision that brought an unexpected sense of excitement and wonder. Gliding through the city’s bustling streets in a fully autonomous vehicle felt like a glimpse into the future of travel—and it’s something I’ll talk about for years to come.

Were there any surprises along the way?

San Francisco’s reputation for facing social challenges had made me somewhat cautious, but I was genuinely impressed by the positive changes evident during my visit. The city appeared much cleaner and more welcoming than in previous years, with a noticeable improvement in safety and public spaces. This renewed sense of vibrancy made exploring its neighbourhoods far more enjoyable, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to fellow travellers.

What tips do you have for travellers planning to visit the same destinations?

My advice is to avoid packing your itinerary too tightly. Each city offers a wealth of attractions, but taking things slowly allows you to discover hidden gems and truly savour the local atmosphere. Hiring a car is highly recommended—California’s public transport can be limited, especially if you want to explore scenic routes or visit wineries and coastal towns at your own pace.

Is there anything indispensable to pack or prepare for?

Ensure you bring a reliable multi-currency card loaded with US dollars before you leave. This saves time and hassle, especially when dining out, shopping, or booking excursions. Many places charge transaction fees for foreign cards, so having a dedicated travel card helps keep costs down and makes payments simple throughout your trip.

Food in California USA

Any local snacks, dishes, or drinks that should be sampled?

Foodies are in for a treat: Monterey is renowned for its selection of local cheeses, which feature in many of the town’s restaurants and markets. In San Francisco, don’t miss the chance to sample the freshest seafood—crab, clam chowder, and oysters are highlights. And, of course, Sonoma’s wines are not to be missed, with tasting rooms offering everything from crisp whites to robust reds.

Any restaurant or bar recommendations?

For an authentic taste of San Francisco, Scoma’s at Fisherman’s Wharf is a must-visit for its superb seafood and welcoming atmosphere. If you’re seeking something truly special, Pebble Beach Golf Club combines fine dining with breathtaking ocean views, making it ideal for a celebratory meal or a memorable evening out. Both venues deliver exceptional food and unforgettable settings.

Sum up your trip in a sentence:

An exhilarating and diverse adventure, blending awe-inspiring landscapes, mouth-watering cuisine, superb wines, and impeccable hospitality into a seamless and unforgettable Californian escape.
